Our Favorite Cold-Weather Things To Do

We’re lucky enough to experience four distinct seasons here in Maryland. (It’s one of our 6 Reasons to Live in Frederick.) Sure, right now it’s a little cold…but give it time and spring will be here before you know it!

If you’re looking for things to do when it’s cold outside, then this is the list for you! We asked our team to provide their best ideas for how to enjoy the winter and they didn’t disappoint. Whether you enjoy the cold or like to hibernate in the winter season, here are a few ideas for activities.

Indoor Activities

  1. Read by the Fireplace: “Cuddling in front of the fireplace and reading a good novel is a great way to pass the time. Murder mysteries & love stories are my favorites!” – TROYCE
  2. Have a Netflix Night: “During the winter, I prefer to stay indoors more than usual. It’s a great time to catch up on shows and have friends over for board games, a fire, and spirits!” – STEVE
  3. Search for Home Design/Decorating Ideas: “I can get lost browsing online at new trends in decorating & table arrangements for entertaining.” – TROYCE
  4. Clean and Catchup on To-Do’s: “On snow days I look forward to cleaning out closets and making wish lists, honey-do projects and planning new things to try.” – TROYCE
  5. Start (or Finish) Home Improvement Projects: “When it’s cold, I focus on home organization and cleaning out closets, the basement, and the garage. I also like to work on interior home improvement projects like adding a backsplash or a bathroom remodel.” – DAN
  6. Play Games: “During the cold weather, we tend to find ourselves playing more games at home, whether its pool, ping pong, darts, building puzzles, or a series of card games.  There is nothing better than cooking a huge meal and just hanging out and playing games.” – JOE
  7. Plan an Annual Getaway: “Each February I look forward to going to “my happy place” It’s Bedford Springs Omni where I get lost in hikes, spa treatments, playing board games in front of the fireplace and lap swimming in the indoor pool.” – TROYCE

“Out of the House” Activities

  1. Attend Downtown First Saturday: “During the winter months, downtown comes to life regardless of the weather with the incredible display of lights, the people, and all the activities in the streets.  Our favorite is in February for the Fire in Ice show; you don’t want to miss it.” – JOE
  2. Watch Planes at Graveley Point Park, Arlington, VA: “One year my family and I went to Graveley Point Virginia and watched the airplanes fly over us. It was a perfect place to get the closest view of all the planes that take off from Reagan National airport.” – ABTEEN
  3. Get Some Exercise: “I love bundling up and going for long walks.” – TROYCE
  4. Enjoy Brunch in Downtown Frederick: “If you’re looking to get out of the house, try doing a Sunday Funday! I love to hit up The Wine Kitchen, Isabella’s, Wilcom’s Inn, or Firestones for Brunch.” – STEVE
  5. Create Something at I Made This: “My sister has three kids, Mina, Henry and Rezdan. We like to take them to “I Made This” in Everedy Square. This place lets you pick out a piece of pottery and paint it. It is really such a fun activity to do with the kids. You are allowed to bring food and drink in. So, we actually grab hot chocolates for everyone the last time we went and painted pottery for a few hours. They fire it for you, and you come back and pick it up at a later date. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and they have anything from plates to mugs to vases. We have even actually had a bachelorette party there. It’s something fun to do indoors and locally with the family or your friends.” – DANIELLE
  6. Find Unique Events in DC: “We went to the ICE show presenting Charlie Brown at the Gaylord National Resort. There we saw characters made of ice sculptures while wearing a special jacket because of the chilly -9°F atmosphere.” – ABTEEN
  7. Climb at Earth Treks: “What an awesome activity for the family or just you and your loved one.  Visit Earth Treks and do some rock climbing.  There are so any options for beginners through the most advanced.  But if you are afraid of heights, beware!” – JOE
  8. Spend an Evening in Rockville, MD: “One year my family went out to dinner, ice-skated in an outdoor rink in the heart of Downtown Rockville, then finished the night grabbing some hot chocolate.” – ABTEEN
  9. Go See a Local Show: “The MET and the Weinberg put on some great shows with local talent to keep visiting relatives entertained or to escape from the regular routine.” – STEVE
  10. Seek Some Live Music: “Live local music is all year long. Hit a pub or bar on a Friday or Saturday after happy hour for a fun night out.” – STEVE
  11. Attend a Sporting Event: “We are Washington sports fans.  The cold months mean Washington Wizards games as we are die-hard fans.  Great reason to go to downtown DC, have a great meal and watch our favorite team, with or without John Wall.” -JOE
  12. Try a New Fitness Routine: “I am passionate about my health and fitness. CrossFit is a passion of mine and I actually have my credentials to coach as I used to when time permits. I participate in CrossFit not just for the health and fitness but because of the community. I have made so many friends through CrossFit and we all support each other in and outside of the box. I also compete locally. I mostly balance my work and school life around my gym life. Gym comes first and it is guaranteed to keep me warm.” – DANIELLE
  13. Eat in Frederick: “Who doesn’t love a break from the grill and no dishes. I’m not opposed to searing a steak in the dead of winter, but with such great local restaurants it can make for a fun evening with exciting food, even to entertain guests. From pub food to exquisite dishes, options are endless. Top it off with a night cap from the Tasting Room or Volt for an interesting cocktail and a conversational environment!” -STEVE
  14. Take a Hike: “I actually really like hiking as well this time of year.  Great time to get out in peace and quiet of nature while many others are not out.  Also, no bugs! The cold air wakes you up and is invigorating.” – DAN
  15. Relax at Omni Bedford Springs“Only 90 minutes from Frederick, the Omni at Bedford Springs is our Happy Place during the cold weather months.  Besides its rich history, hiking trails, and great restaurants, their spa and indoor natural mineral spring swimming pool is absolutely amazing.  Great way to spend a weekend or a quick getaway during the week.” – JOE
  16. Toast to the Winter at a Winery: “Wineries are plenty exciting for Winter as well. Springfield Manor or Linganore Winery are a great way to polish off a Sunday with tastings and fun events for arts, crafts and other various activities.” – STEVE
